About us

The Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service (VFPMS) is a state-wide service providing assessments for children and young people, under 18 years of age, who might have been abused, neglected or assaulted. VFPMS works collaboratively with health professionals, police and child protection.

The doctors at VFPMS assess injuries to determine, wherever possible, the cause and mechanism of injury. The child’s health, development, safety, wellbeing and behaviour are also evaluated. Sometimes medical tests and medical imaging are required.

A medical report is usually provided to the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and police, providing details of the assessment.

A network of doctors and health professionals throughout Victoria provide the service, which is run by the Monash Children’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital and funded by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services. Clinical services in Melbourne are provided at Monash Children’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Monash Children’s Hospital Unit

This unit is staffed by consultant paediatricians with expertise in forensic medicine, a forensic physician and nurse managers. This experienced and compassionate team is trained in the assessment, care and treatment of children under 18 who have experienced abuse including physical and sexual assault.

A multidisciplinary response is considered best practice within the health sector in all situations of suspected physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect of a child or young person, including paediatric assessments of at risk and vulnerable children.

We also provide inpatient consultation to Monash Children’s Hospital.

24 hour response

Services are provided 24/7 by the best person in the best way at the best time using the most efficient and effective aspects of the health system.

The service offers 24 hour access to expert medical opinion regarding possible child abuse and neglect. However the majority of our consultations are conducted during business hours.

Consultation occurs with the on-call VFPMS doctor about inpatient assessments, which are conducted within 24 hours of the referral or, if the child is in a critical condition, on the day of referral. Doctors on call will respond promptly to phone inquiries.

Early consultation is encouraged as this may minimise complications and reduce angst.
